El Diente de Leche (The Milk Tooth) is a series about the brief time between late childhood and early adolescence. The pictures were made between the years 2014 and 2016, while I was working as a teacher assistant in a bilingual school in Berlin, in a class of new students, where they learn German and Spanish both as first languages. Most of the kids have immigration background and had come with their families to Germany recently. They were around 12 years and met each other during their last two years of the elementary school.
Spanish was our common language, that allows us to connect rapidly. I spent two years with the group of kids, observing their constant state of becoming and transformation. Gradually I started to join some of the kids in their free time out of the school and became closer with Angelica and Merlina, two girls with Latin American background, being invited to birthday parties and meeting their families. In the last day of sixth grade, Angélica lost her last milk tooth.
